Narcissism and Domestic Abuse

All abuse has elements of narcissism in it, but not all abusive behavior implies clinical narcissism.

Now that may sound like double talk but it most clearly reflects clinical observations.

“All abuse has some elements of narcissism” refers to the essential aspect of no regard for the other. But many abusive behaviors are implosion exploding in an irresponsibly way.

It tends to be intermittent and can be out of control in the moment… though the act itself was likely a gesture to regain a felt loss of control.

These behaviors are far more amenable to intervention and correction than those of an individual whose underlying presentation fulfills the criteria for pervasive and characterologically rooted narcissism.

It’s always wise to know what one is treating before any form of intervention, especially when it comes to domestic abuse.
